एक मैंटिस टिड्डा खेत की बाड़ पर बैठकर शाम ढलते देख रहा था. पास से एक गाय गुज़री. टिड्डे ने उसे देखकर कहा, “अरे! तुम तो बहुत ही बड़ी हो!”
गाय ने चिढ़कर कहा, “तुम मुझे मोटा कह रहे हो!?”
“नहीं, नहीं!”, टिड्डे ने कहा, लेकिन गाय मुंह फेरकर चली गयी.
कुछ देर बाड़ एक पीले पेट वाला कठफोड़वा बाड़ पर आकर बैठ गया. उसे देखकर टिड्डे ने कहा, “भाई, तुम्हारा पेट तो बहुत पीला है!”
“तुम यह कह रहे हो कि मैं बीमार हूँ!?”, पीले पेट वाले कठफोड़वे ने कहा, “क्या मैं डरपोक हूँ!? मैं यहाँ किसी दूसरे प्राणी जितना ही बहादुर हूँ! मैं कोई चूजा नहीं हूँ!”, नाराज़गी से यह कहकर कठफोड़वा उड़ गया.
टिड्डे ने अपने विचार सहेजे और डूबते सूरज को देखने लगा. सामने से एक बुलडॉग जा रहा था. इस बार टिड्डे ने सावधानी से शब्दों का चुनाव किया और कहा, “नमस्ते. आपकी नाक तो बहुत सुन्दर है!”
“तुम्हें मेरी नाक अटपटी लग रही है!?”, बुलडॉग ने गुर्राते हुए कहा, “क्या यह तुम्हें सूअर के थूथन जैसी दिख रही है? तुम मुझे अच्छे से जानते नहीं हो, नहीं तो मेरे बारे में ऐसा नहीं कहते”, यह कहकर बुलडॉग अकड़ता हुआ चला गया.
टिड्डा सूरज को ताकता रहा. हाल ही में घटी घटनाएं उसके मन में हलचल मचा रही थीं. उसने अपने हाथ जोड़े और प्रार्थना की. वह देर तक बाड़ पर शांति से बैठा रहा. उस दिन से ही मैंटिस टिड्डे शांति से कहीं भी बैठकर प्रार्थना करते दिखते हैं और हम उन्हें प्रेयर मैंटिस (Prayer Mantis) कहते हैं.
दुनिया में ऐसे लोगों की कमी नहीं है जो आपकी बातों से मनचाहा या विपरीत अर्थ निकाल लेते हैं. वे जो कुछ भी कहते हैं उससे उनके भीतर की आशंकाएं और असुरक्षा ही झलकती है. वे आपकी बात सुनते ही रक्षात्मक मुद्रा में आ जाते हैं, जबकि आपने केवल एक साधारण तथ्य ही प्रकट किया था. शायद यही कारण है कि ज्ञानी व्यक्ति बहुत नपे-तुले शब्दों में ही अपने विचार व्यक्त करते हैं और प्रतिक्रिया नहीं करते.

A praying mantis was standing a-top a fence post overlooking a field when a cow passed by. “Wow, you are really big,” the mantis said to the cow.
“Are you calling me fat?” The cow replied with a huff.
“Not at all,” the Mantis replied. But the cow strutted off offended. A few minutes later a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (bird/woodpecker) landed on the fence post next to the praying mantis. “Oh my, you have a yellow belly,” the mantis said in earnest.
“Are you saying I’m afraid,” the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker chattered, “You calling me ‘yellow?’ I’ll have you know I am as brave as any other creature out here. I am not a chicken you know,” and the woodpecker flew off in a huff.
The mantis gathered its thoughts and went back to watching the sun set when a hound dog walked by in the grass below. “Hello,” the mantis said politely. The mantis thought about its word carefully then said, “What a lovely nose you have.”
“You saying I am nosy?” The hound dog barked, “You think I put my nose where it doesn’t belong. You don’t even know me, how can you say such a thing?” The dog barked and then ran off offended.
The mantis sat and the watched the sunset, contemplating the events that had just occurred and ‘perhaps’ that is why, to this day, the praying mantis is silent.
