एक मिट्टी का घड़ा और एक पीतल का घड़ा नदी किनारे घाट पर रखे हुए थे। नदी की धारा ने उन्हें नदी में खींच लिया और वे नदी में उतराते हुए बहने लगे। मिट्टी का घड़ा पानी की बड़ी-बड़ी लहरों को देखकर चिंतित हो गया। पीतल के घड़े ने उसे चिंतित देखकर दिलासा दिया – “परेशान मत हो, किसी भी संकट में मैं तुम्हारी सहायता करूँगा”।
“अरे नहीं!” – मिट्टी का घड़ा भयभीत स्वर में बोला – “कृपा करके मुझसे जितना दूर रह सकते हो उतना दूर रहना! मेरे भय का वास्तविक कारण तुम ही हो। भले ही लहरें मुझे तुमसे टकरा दें या तुम्हें मुझसे टकरा दें, टूटना मुझे ही है।”

यह भय शायद कमजोर और ताकतवर का नहीं बल्कि दो भिन्न स्वभाव के लोगों के बीच का होना चाहिए। जैसे कि कटोरी और लहसुन वाला उदाहरण है। कटोरी को लहसुन पर रखा जाए या लहसुन को कटोरी पर। बदबू लहसुन की ही रहेगी।
