एक दिन एक व्यक्ति ने च्वांग-त्जु से कहा – “मेरे घर के आँगन में एक बहुत बड़ा वृक्ष है जो बिल्कुल ही बेकार है। इसका तना इतना कठोर और ऐंठा हुआ है कि कोई भी लकड़हारा या बढ़ई उसे काट नहीं सकता। उसकी शाखाएं इतनी मुडी हुई हैं कि उनसे औजारों के लिए हत्थे नहीं बनाये जा सकते। ऐसे वृक्ष के होने से क्या लाभ?”
च्वांग-त्जु ने कहा – “क्या तुमने नदी में उछलने वाली मछलियाँ देखी हैं? वे बहुत छोटी और चंचल होती हैं। जल की सतह पर उड़ते कीडों और टिड्डों को देखते ही वे लपक कर उन्हें अपना शिकार बना लेती हैं। लेकिन ऐसी मछलियाँ ज्यादा समय तक जीवित नहीं रहतीं। या तो वे जाल में फंस जाती हैं या दूसरी मछलियों द्वारा मारी जाती हैं। वहीं दूसरी और याक कितना बड़ा और बेढब जानवर है। वह न तो खेत में काम करता है न ही कोई और काम अच्छे से कर पता है। लेकिन याक बहुत लंबा जीते हैं। तुम्हारा वृक्ष इतना अनुपयोगी होने के कारण ही इतने लंबे समय से खड़ा है। उसकी शाखाओं के नीचे बैठकर उसका ध्यान करो।”

Hui Tzu said to Chuang, “I have a big tree, the kind they call a “stinktree.” The trunk is so distorted, so full of knots, no one can get a straight plank out of it. The branches are so crooked you cannot cut them up in any way that makes sense.”
“There it stands beside the road. No carpenter will even look at it. Such is your teaching – big and useless.”
Chuang Tzu replied, “Have you ever watched the wildcat crouching, watching his prey. The prey leaps this way, and that way, high and low, and at last lands in the trap. And have you seen the Yak? Great as a thundercloud, he stands in his might. Big? Sure, but he can’t catch mice!”
“So for your big tree, no use? Then plant it in the wasteland, in emptiness. Walk idly around it, rest under its shadow. No axe or bill prepares its end. No one will ever cut it down.”
“Useless? You should worry!”
